 The Vietnam Veterans of America, Pinellas County Chapter 522, in memory of the many contributions made by Harold Dwight Harrah, have created a special scholarship fund to assist local students who intend to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities at accredited colleges or universities of their choosing. Harold Dwight Harrah was a Vietnam veteran, a long-time member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and former officer of Pinellas County Chapter 522.
Chapter 522 intends to award 2 scholarships each in the amount of $1000 in May, 2010.
  The students selected to receive the scholarships will be notified by April 30, 2010. Chapter 522 will present the awards in May, and the scholarship funds will be sent directly to the colleges and/or universities designated by the students.
  All students interested in applying for the scholarships must be designated as graduating seniors by their respective schools and must complete all required coursework between January, 2010 and June, 2010. Eligible students must be enrolled in a Florida public or private high school at the time of graduation
  Students interested in participating in the scholarship process must obtain an application form and guidelines from Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 522 at www.vva522.org or the contact number above and one will be mailed to you. Candidates for the Harold Dwight Harrah Scholarship Fund must be fervent learners with a passion for personal success as well as a strong desire to help others succeed and excel in their chosen fields. Students must be able to demonstrate an ability to persevere under difficult situations and to overcome obstacles while maintaining a positive attitude.
  Applicants will be required to submit a 1000-word essay describing how this scholarship will be beneficial in supporting their educational goals.
  All entries must be received on or before April 20, 2010. Chapter 522 will appoint a scholarship committee that will be chaired by Thien Julie Harrah to review and select the winning entries. The committee will establish a set of criteria to evaluate all accepted entries. The committee will be the sole entity involved in the selection process and all decisions made by the committee will be final.

  In the event the selected recipient of a scholarship is not able to accept the award for 2010 for any reason, the committee will then make the award to the back-up candidate. The back-up candidate will be the runner-up so designated by the selection committee when all applications are evaluated.

Other criteria for applicants include the following;

All applicants must be citizens of the United States of America and related to a Veteran.

All applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.00 (based of a 4.0 system).

All applicants must be able to document volunteer work or community service activities within the last 12 months.

All applicants must have a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or mentor.

All applicants will be asked to identify their need for financial assistance. This factor will be considered and evaluated as part of the overall selection process.

The candidates selected for the Harold Dwight Harrah Scholarship Fund must begin college courses in the fall of 2010.
